I’m hopeful that the glacial pace of our government is coming around to the will of the American people. I can remember wondering for years what happened to the American people. When it became well documented before the 2004 elections that Bush lied us into this war I was pretty sure that the American people couldn’t stand a liar and would get rid of this joke-on-the-American-people of a President. Then he allegedly won, (recent court cases in Ohio now document that 2004 was another stolen election like 2000, always conveniently finding out after the fact, years after the blogs let me in on it). As it turns out I guess Americans will tolerate a liar since we are so conditioned to these professional liars, but Americans have no tolerance for a looser, which Bush is now becoming right before even the most rose colored Bush-supporter eyes. Congress is the people’s bitch whether they agree or not. We are going to stop this war, and impeachment should only be the beginning. When this is all over I want this Bush character taken out of his prison cell every 7 years to fail a parole hearing so we can show him on the TV like Manson and make fun of him. I was screaming “CRIME” when this war started. Now I scream “I TOLD YOU SO”.

I know it is a novel idea but just let Bush veto the spending bill. What would happen? THE MILITARY WOULD RUN OUT OF MONEY. Then what would happen? They would have to 1) shut down operations and 2) start bringing troops home. Gosh, and what could be so bad about that?

ozonehole: That situations will deterioriate is a given, in that they are currently in Bush’s hands. This guy seems to have the anti-midas touch. He is a master of disaster. So why waste more American military lives by playing into his lies. Let the confrontation begin!!!

Jon Koppenhoefer: I wish I could argue with you more fervently. My only counterpoints are two: 1) the populace (according to polls) is evidently (but very slowly) catching on to his sinister lies. And, 2) We have a traditon here in the USA about protesting arbitrary rule. I know it’s not much. But hey, I got to be hopeful.

Unfortunately, the much-inflated ‘wisdom of the people’ has been abused by the lying bastards in the Bush White House many times in the past.

I’m not sure that a nation in which over 50 million voters can be frightened into voting twice for a disgusting, pathetic pissant like George W. Bush should be trusted to wake up to his cheap rhetorical tricks any time soon.

Any democracy worth the name would have impeached this mountebank long ago.

I think Krugman failed to follow through with (what I consider) the whole point of this theater. Bush actually wants Congress to force his hand, cut off funding, so that he can blame the Democrats for “losing the war in Iraq.” The fact that the Democrats aren’t really forcing his hand might not register with the American public. Bush is counting on the Joe Sixpack voters to conclude, “We would have won the war, if only the Democrats hadn’t cut off the funding.”

Which is why maybe the Democrats should give him what he wants, this time. Let the blame for this fiasco rest where it should, firmly on President Bush’s shoulders.

From my viewpoint, the American public has repeatedly fallen for the smoke-and-mirrors lies that Bush and the Neocons spew out. But will the Dems deal with it effectively or cave-in to it? Can Americans still handle the truth when FauxNews is so much more passionately patriotic?
