Investigate the Propaganda Pundits

From Free Press:

Dear Friend,

The Pentagon is infiltrating the media with pro-war propaganda.

The scheme reaches all the way to the Bush White House, where top officials recruited dozens of “military analysts” to spread favorable views of the war via every major news channel — without revealing they were working from Pentagon scripts and often lobbying for major military contractors looking to cash in on the war.

This is a violation of every conceivable standard of journalism — and possibly of federal law.

Happy Birthday Arianna

It’s the birthday of journalist and writer Arianna Huffington, born in Athens, Greece (1950). She went to Cambridge and moved to America in 1980. She was a conservative columnist, but over the years she’s become more and more liberal. Arianna Huffington wrote,

“One of the definite changes in my thinking was born of the hard reality I confronted when I discovered how much easier it was raising money for the opera and fashionable museums than for at-risk children. So I came to recognize that the task of overcoming poverty will not be achieved without the raw power of government appropriations.”

Her book, How to Overthrow the Government, came out in 2000.

Republicans move to block Al Gore ‘Live Earth’ rock concert

Republicans in Congress are trying to bar former vice president Al Gore’s anti-global warming mega-concert from its planned venue on the steps of the US Capitol building.

Gore is planning a single-day, series of free “Live Earth” concerts on seven continents, with the goal of calling attention to the climate change crisis. The US concert, scheduled for the steps of the Capitol on July 7, 2007, has drawn an A-list slate of pop performers, including the Police, Kanye West, Faith Hill, Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Do You Believe the NRA Should Get Their Way and Allow Terrorists to Buy Military Guns in the United States?

I Don’t.

The NRA and the gun lobby protect the right of possible terrorists to buy guns.

According to the Violence Policy Center of Washington, D.C., “Current law is so weak that being a known member of a foreign terrorist organization does not prohibit a person from legally buying and possessing guns.”

Will you join me in telling the NRA we won’t let them compromise our national security?

Do you oppose the NRA’s efforts to allow potential terrorists to buy guns in the United States, including military weapons?

Do you support national security above the gun lobby’s interests in profit and power?

Will you call upon our law enforcement officials to defy the NRA’s impact on our national firearms policy, which threatens our national safety?

Marching With a Mouse

Op-Ed Columnist

There aren’t a lot of environmental groups with their own investment bank consultants, so when you hear that Environmental Defense has just hired the boutique Wall Street firm Perella Weinberg Partners, you know that we’re in a new world. Every college activist should study this story, because it is the future. In the old days, when activists wanted something done, they held a sit-in or organized a protest march. Now they hire an investment bank.

An Open Letter To Congress, from a Concerned Citizen

by Ward Reilly
Dear Members of Congress,

Greetings from a common United States citizen. I am an Infantry veteran, having volunteered for the military from 1971 to 1974, and I grew up during the Viet Nam era, the most tumultuous time in our history, until now.

I write to you today in regards to the elections on November 7, 2006, and about how you must now save our nation.

On election day, we, the voting citizens of your nation, your boss, ordered you to stop the war in Iraq, and to do it now. We handed you our power, THE power, to do a job.

Speak out Against the Deadly Use of Cluster Munitions

Via Amnesty International:  For decades, the U.S. has been using indiscriminate cluster bombs in civlian areas, unnecessarily killing innocent civilians, including many children. These bombs were meant to be used on the battlefield – not in villages or towns. The majority of the time, these bombs also leave behind scores of unexploded mini-bombs, threatening civilians in a way similar to landmines.

Today, you can do something to help stop this human rights scandal. Write your Senator to co-sponsor the Cluster Munitions Civilian Protection Act (S.594). Take action

Armchair Activism That Works

1. Progressives should think creatively about the potential of current technology to build power.

2. Networks of volunteers are particularly well-suited to gathering information.

3. Progressives need just the kind of information volunteer networks can produce.

4. The time to start is now.
